Netflix's content chief has eyes set on NFL Sunday games

Feb. 18, 2025 3:08 PM ETNetflix, Inc. (NFLX) StockDIS, FWONA, FOXBy: Ahmed Farhath, SA News Editor

Bela Bajaria, the chief content officer at Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX), has set her eyes on the NFL Sunday games, further getting into sports live streaming and not just special events, after the recent success of the NFL Christmas games.

According to a report from Front Office Sports Tuesday, Bajaria said at The Town podcast, developed by The Ringer and Puck, “I definitely want the Sunday [afternoon] games,” when she was asked what package she would be interested in when NFL media rights became available.

CBS and Fox (FOX) hold the NFL’s current rights, including for Sunday afternoon programming, until after the 2033 season.

The NFL has an opt-out for its individual agreements after the 2029 season, and it is likely that the company would do so after seeing record audiences from live streaming efforts, the report said.

It also has an opt-out for its ESPN (DIS) deal after the 2030 season.

The streaming giant recently secured rights for the Women's FIFA World Cup, has a 10-year deal in place for WWE RAW, and is looking to win rights to the Formula One (FWONA) tournament in the U.S.

Simple supply and demand. Ratings keep going up. NFL owners, players, agents, coaches keep benefiting. Salary cap keeps going up 10% per year

expect it all to continue. International games, constant rule changes, games on all kinds of platforms, Sunday ticket to cost more.

I accept and expect it. All NFL fans should. Can’t help it. I love the game too much to miss anything. You should too. Every sport is doing it. The one with the most success is doing it more.

I concur that it will continue. This isn’t my Dad’s NFL
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
          Hope is not a strategy
          RIP

I get it Popper. Change sucks. I hate paying for Peacock to get a handful of games. I have and like all the other streaming services so it doesn’t bother me. What does bother me is the right ms cost so much that they just turn around and raise the monthly price. At least we are football fans. Non fans must hate when their streaming services goes up because the NFL rights are so expensive.

guess it’s like your kids getting older and moving out and your taxes go up to support the local schools. Even when you don’t have kids in the system anymore?

oh well. Everything is getting more expensive and the gap between haves and have nots is just getting bigger. Just get used to bending over. Lol

Btw, id love for Fox to lose rights to the NFC. Pre and post game is about as unwatchable as I can remember. Mute button has been my friend for too long.

OMG I can't watch those pregame shows. I'd rather watch the weather channel.

Sunday ticket costing more is a joke, especially with all these games spread out across all these platforms. I understand blackouts but the fact that they move some shit to Friday and I can’t watch it? Bs.

We are gonna see them play 5 days a week in my lifetime. That gives everyone a chance to purchase a day of their own What’s 60 say ? It’s all about the $$$$$
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I agree on Sunday ticket. Although for me it is still cheaper than going to one game. As an out of towner I need it. YouTube TV has done a good job with it.
