  • Wentz

Surfaces again. I asked my wife to look to see if we still have my old Wentz jersey in some box somewhere. I’m taking my two sons and two of my grandsons to the Eagles Vikings game in Minneapolis and am thinking about using tape to write HA Ha over old number 11.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy

We owe Wentz. We would have been waiting even longer for #1 without him
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I was thinking about Wentz yesterday. How frustrating for him to be on the sidelines with the Eagles when they won SB 1 with Foles. Then, he was on the sidelines for KC last year when the Eagles won SB 2.

Wentz got hurt in 2017/18. It happens. Instead of supporting his teammates, he sulked. By all accounts, he was then insecure about competition from a second round pick, having been pick no. 2 overall himself. Adversity is part of life. Responding to it properly is what separates winners from losers on the field and off. Wentz is a loser. If Wentz had a tenth of Alex Smith in his heart, he would still be starting in the NFL.

No offense fly, but I hear that all the time and I think it's BS. Anybody would be sulking if they were in that situation. I mean the guy was going to win an MVP before he got hurt and they draft a quarterback? We owe Wentz everything because we never would have gotten to the Super Bowl without him. It was a good thing he was on the sideline for that game though because Nick played the game of his life And we probably would still be waiting for The First one. The one thing that Nick could do that Carson was effective Rpos and that play won us the Super Bowl.

Well that and he seemed to stop listening to coaches when he got paid. He had flaws and did not seem to improve on them at all, then got hero-ball habits he cannot break.

He was a crucial part of Super Bowl #1. Maybe if he had played and won that game instead, he doesn't crumble. But yes, he reacted to that incredibly badly. Whereas Hurts, in a far worse situation at Alabama, handled it amazingly well.

I definitely want to remember how good he was his first two years, especially 2017, and thank him for his huge contribution towards that. But I have never seen a player fall that far that fast, after. I remain convinced that part of the Hurts pick was uncertainty that Wentz could continue to be "the guy". There were warnings signs in 2019 especially, though 2020 was downright awful -- when he was benched I'm not sure he was even playing at a backup level.

Something about Wentz was just never right. I'm not sure the guy loves football enough. I wish him all the best but man this team got better faster when we showed him the door.

There were locker room reports that he was pretty much hoping the Eagles would lose without him. Fans don't see that, but teammates do. I get the depression over that -- it affected his career dramatically. But... refusing to run RPOs because he associated them with Foles, in subsequent seasons (as has since been reported), is just ... oof. Hard to fathom how coaches let him get away with that -- if the coaches want to run that play because it works, run it. It was a terrible situation but it ended up affecting him permanently (and maybe he did not have the mentality to deal with adversity that much in the first place). What Hurts did in his Alabama situation is nearly superhuman, but Wentz should have been able to deal with things better once he got back on the field. The offense never looked the same in 2018 or 2019, and it's hard to know how much of that was Wentz versus coaching versus other players' injuries. For example, once they found Agholor was a good slot receiver, injuries to outside receivers forced him back outside and he was never good for us again. We had lousy depth at outside WR then (and of course lousy starters once Alshon was gone). But Wentz certainly has some of the blame. He's been a bad QB mostly since he left -- he cannot stop the hero ball stuff and accept he needs to throw the ball away much more quickly. He had a hopeful stretch with the Colts but just collapsed when the pressure was on at the end (which dramatically helped the Eagles, actually).

Just to be clear, I wish Wentz all the best. I am just glad he is not here. Quarterback needs to be a leader of men … which Wentz isn’t. And for the $107m guaranteed, listening to your employer’s directions (coaching) isn’t a lot to ask.

I will throw out that I believe a major part of Hurts’ selection was based on Wentz not being real acceptable to coaching early on. When he was at NDSU he wasn’t known to be congenial to coaching. He was much better than FCS competition and had such good playmakers it wasn’t a great issue. I think the birds saw some of that and drafted Hurts as insurance. That might’ve compounded the problem. Or it might have solved it.
On another note I won’t be surprised to see Wentz taking over Vikings starting QB at some point this season.

NoDak... I think you hit the nail on the head there. I think JJ McCarthy is not great and I could see Wentz being called into action at some point this year either due to injury or poor play.

I have zero ill will towards Wentz but even when he was good there was a bit of confusion on how it was happening. He looked like Brett Favre out there making a great throw and then making a terrible play.

People claim that Hurts is being carried by his roster. Maybe a bit. But I will say Wentz was carried by his roster also. That defense was outstanding. Fletcher, Malcom Jenkins I think are both Hall of Fame level players although I don't think Fletcher is going to get in. They had a lot of depth on defense. Offensively, that OL was also outstanding. Lane, Kelce, outstanding guards and even after we had injuries Big V stepped in and played very well. That was all Stoutland.

Post injury Wentz something went wrong with not just his body but also his brain. And I just think the guy didn't love football and still doesn't. I think he'd rather be sitting in a deer stand.

That is NOT the case with Jalen Hurts. Hurts is a football guy through and through. I'd rather have that. It's the reason why Baker Mayfield I think is going to make it. I also think its the reason why guys like Michael Penix, Bryce Young, Stroud and Bo Nix will succeed. They are all football all the time. Compare them to Kyler Murray, Caleb Williams and a few others who are not constant football guys.

The NFL is a tough environment and if you aren't mentally tough it will eat you up. Wentz got eaten up.

I appreciate what Wentz did for this team. Without his incredible play in 2017 the Eagles don’t get the #1 seed and probably don’t even make the playoffs.

But for all of his skill, his ego just destroyed his ability to learn and grow. He should have been singing Foles’ praises after taking over and getting them a ring. If you believe in yourself you come back the next year and fight for your job. It was apparent from his sulking and whining that he didn’t believe in himself enough to win the starting job. Add in his distain for coaching and that isn’t a red flag, it’s a flashing neon sign with a siren going off!

If you don’t think you’re good enough to win the job against your backup, but also aren’t willing to learn how to improve you have no business being on the team. If that’s what Howie and the coaches saw then how could they not take another QB high in the draft? His reaction to Hurts just proved what they saw when he had to battle Foles.

Thanks for all your great play Carson, but you have to be willing to fight for the job every day or you shouldn’t be in the league.

I think if Wentz didn't get hurt he'd still be the Eagles quarterback. His legs were such a big part of his game and when he came back from that injury he just wasn't himself and it killed his game. As AW said, we never would have gotten the number one seed without him and that home field advantage propelled us to the Super Bowl. Of course one of the best receivers ever to play slipping in the end zone on 4th down helped too!

I think when he got his Hunting Show he kinda lost interest in getting his ass kicked . He already made his bank, The Outdoor and Sportsman’s Channels made all those guys rich and they get to do what they love without investing 1 penny of your own money. Great gig if you can get it.
