He looks really good. If McNabb goes down again I think the kid needs to play. He's the future anyway right?

What do we do about the holder is Sav continues to struggle?

Would they consider bringing back Koy to hold and have Kolb #2?

I agree he has looked pretty good for a raw recruit. Guarantee you though the 'Birds will go with IP if Mcnabb goes down again.

Akers has been quoted as saying he likes Sav better than Dirk (saw that somewhere, so might just be Internet stuff), I also agree and I think most have here that they should be having a QB or WR hold before they have the punter, but hey thats the way AR wants to go.

I don't think they would seriously consider bringing Koy back unless at least 2 of the QB's go down.

I generally would prefer a QB doing the holding duties, but I would have some reservations in regard to A.J. doing it right now, what with the broken left hand. Kolb has enough to learn in the system to not need the added pressure of having to hold also. Do we have a receiver anyone would feel comfortable with holding?

        Re: Kolb

The only reason to have a QB hold is obviously for fakes. Australian football does not allow a player (any player!) to throw the ball - it is hit sort of like a volleyball. That means that Rocca isn't really used to throwing the ball when there's a rush coming at him. Making him the holder is going to limit our ability to fake unless Andy and Company have seen him throw and feel he can do it under game conditions. Rocca is a big guy at 6'5" 265 lbs. so with his size he'd be a tough guy to bring down once he gets some momentum. Set up a few blocks and he might be pretty formidable. That would certainly be a lot of fun to watch!! Let's see how it plays out but I really LOVE his potential to get us out of trouble with long punts. Great call by Andy and Company on this one.

I would use a QB as a holder just because they're more accustomed to handling the football and would probably be able to get the ball down and in the right place. I love Rocca as a punter, but he scares the shit out of me as a holder. I really hope they Eagles don't need to hit a last second FG early in the season, we could have a Tommy Hutton situation.

Meh. How many fake FGs has AR called in his coaching career? Maybe 3? And the one that ended up working was the one where Koy tossed the ball to Akers who ran for the first down. Sav could easily do that. I don't remember a single fake FG where Koy took the snap and threw a pass. So to me it's that's a non-issue.

            Re: Kolb

I like the idea of setting up for a field goal and then having Rocca go under center to bust it up for a 1 yard 1st down.

Also - while not passing, they have direct snapped to Akers before to punt the ball. So if you want the prospect of a fake fg/pass, I'd suggest they could still do it with Akers. As for holding - a QB doesn't need to hold, just a guy with good hands. Did any of you see that Schobel is the back-up holder now?

I did see that and i remarked that he must have been pretty bad if he couldn't beat out Rocca! I didn't see him get any action in the pre-season as a holder either.

Schobel was the backup holder in college and then in Cincy as well.

Which begs the question, why couldn't he just be the holder period? This says 1 of 2 things obvious - Schobel really isn't that good at it, but at least he has experience...or they are really REALLY confident that Rocca is going to be good at it.

Rocca is not as bad as some are stating. He muffed a bad snap, so you have to give him some slack on that. Akers did hit a lot of FG's last year with Johnson, yet Akers stated that he thought Rocca was better. So, if Akers is happy with Rocca, why are we so freaked about him. Where are the credible articles stating that Rocca is scary?

I wonder if anyone really thinks a former pro athlete has no ability to throw a football forward....just because the rule in his league had him passing backwards or forward with a punch. I expect him to have a little skill at throwing the ball. But as Swing said, we shouldn't need to fake with Akers back there and AR rarely did it with a QB back there.

                    Holding? We'll be fine there.

Do we need credible articles? We only kicked a handful of field goals in the fake games with Rocca holding, and he muffed 1, and didn't get the laces pointed out on 2 of them. To me, that's scary. Now, I'm willing to give the guy the benefit of the doubt, but I'm not going to pretend the concern by others isn't completely valid until he proves he can do it on a consistent basis.

I especially fear the Eagles needing a last-second game winning kick early in the season. The pressure on Doronbas and Rocca will be intense after the spotty preseason.
