  • LJ wants to stay and perhaps for less

than he could make on the open market.

    From the eagles website:

Siciliano: As a free agent to be, do you want to be back in Philadelphia? What do you think will go down?

Smith: Philly is one of those places, honestly, where pretty much any player wants to be. If you play well and you play hard, they will take care of you the rest of your life. You'll always have a job somewhere in the city of Philadelphia. I definitely want to be back, yes, but, you know, it's a business. Around these times, players actually want to go into free agency because the money is that well. But I'd rather be somewhere where I'm happy than get a great deal.

if they can't sign him long-term, i think they should franchise him
Don't kid yourself Jimmy. If a cow ever got the chance, he'd kill you and everyone you cared about!

sounds good,,, but I've heard that same speech about a 100 times already.... let me see where he signs then I'll take it for more than just a player trying to walk the tightrope of FA.

Well, I'm a cynic in this case too, MD. LJ has talked out of both sides of his mouth. If he turned the corner and I felt like he was dedicated to being here and performing, I could support him. But as it stands, I don't particlularly like the guy.

I think franchising him makes the most sense. Tie him up for one year. Either that or a cap friendly deal that allows us to sever ties after 1 year with minimal cap implications.

I concur on the tag because I don't think there is much available but.... if he is tagged and they get an unexpected gift in the draft I would be ok with removing the tag. If not letting Schobel walk would be ok to.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy

At first I wasn't really crazy about keeping LJ but now I have no problems with it. He knows the O and if it helps us pick up somebody else at another position of need I am all for it.

I hate everything the Cowboys stand for. If you think they are America's team, then you support everything that is wrong with America. The excess, the greed, the lack of maturity, the lack of responsibility, the lack of control. - Luzinski's Gut

I concur. Tag him. The franchise tender for a TE is (...somebody help me out here!) around 4 mil?? Not sure, but it is not as high as a WR or CB.

It looks like it will be a little over 4.5M for TE's. That would be over-paying him but with the whole league flush with cap space players are going to be over-paid. It would definitely fill a need with a player who knows the system so I think it's worth the cost so they can concentrate on other areas. With the 17M of reported cap space available plus Bannerized cap space from 07 having enough cap space won't be the problem....having enough good players is the problem so I think this is a move that should be made. It should serve the needs of the team and the player.

That's going to be the strange part...now that there's more cap space, the salaries for "just right" and "overpaid" are going to go up.....and until a few contracts get signed, nobody really knows where those salaries will be.

Re: LJ wants to stay and perhaps for less

If he wants to resign for less than what he might get if he looks elsewhere, do it. I would much rather see than then him getting franchised. But if that's what they have to do, fine. LJ is an important piece to this offense.

I've never understood why so many don't like LJ....Is he Witten? No, but there aren't many who are. LJ is a pretty darn good TE. Probably in the top third of the league when he is healthy. And other than this past season, he has been healthy...unless I am forgetting an injury somewhere. And it's no coincidence that our red zone offense struggled mightily this season.

If it can get done, I hope they do it. Having LJ and Celek is a pretty solid TE combo.

Besides, there just isn't much out there if he does leave. It's great to want to replace someone, but if you do you better make sure there is something as good if not better out there. And really, there isn't.
