Jim Zorn hired as Washington Redskins coach

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
    Associated Press

WASHINGTON -- The Washington Redskins hired Jim Zorn as their coach Saturday night, a surprise ending to a month-long search for a replacement for Joe Gibbs.

Zorn's hiring was confirmed to ESPN.com's John Clayton on Saturday night by sources familiar with the situation.

Zorn will be introduced at a news conference at 3 p.m. Sunday, according to a person who was informed of the Redskins' decision. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because a formal announcement had not been made.

Zorn, a former Seattle quarterback, has been the Seahawks' quarterbacks coach for the last seven years. The Redskins hired him to be their offensive coordinator on Jan. 26 while continuing their search for a head coach.

This is a headscratcher, IMO. What did Fassel say that pushed him out of the running?

Hopefully this guy has less success then Holmgren's last QB coach that went right to HC.

My first assumption would be that Fassel wanted to choose his assistants and not have them chosen for him. I don't blame him.

This guy got the job because he will make a good yes man for Snyder.

WC is right. Why take a job when everything will be chosen for you? This is the exact reason why I LOVE Snyder being the owner of the Skins.

If anyone but Snyder was the owner, Id think this was a good move. Like someone said, Holmgren's last QB coach has done ok as a HC.
HOWEVER, it IS L'il Napoleon calling the shots, and the NFL knows it, and he'll continue to shove players and coaches down Zorn's throat. He's just taking the job (and I would bet this is true of most of the HC candidates) to ride it out, collect the money, and position his name as a legit NFL HC for when he is inevitably sh*t-canned 2 yrs from now.

Re: Jim Zorn hired as Washington Redskins coach

TO me this shows that the quality HC candidates have recognized Washington as a place to avoid. Danny wants a figure head to blame when the shit hits the fan and he hires head coaches as sacrificial lambs to take the blame in the media when this go bad. At this point I doubt any quality coach would go there and consider it anything more than a spring board for a better job down the road. This smells of desperation on Snyder's part. He promoted Zorn a couple of weeks ago to OC and now can't find anyone to take the HC job so he moves him up that that role. Washington is a joke of an organization and it would seem that the entire league not only knows it, but all the quality personnel want to avoid linking themselves to Snyder at all costs.

Heard an interesting theory on sports radio while at work: Maybe Zorn is keeping the seat warm until Danny gets a chance to talk to Bill Cowher.

I have a feeling that his hiring took a little longer because Cowher said no.

As long as Snyder is steering the ship, two wins every year in division is fine by me.

Of course, money talks, and very loudly at that, but I honestly don't see Bill Cower wanting any part of the goatfck that is the Washington Redskins ownership/FO. He's certainly going to want a lot of control, which he's not going to get in DC, where the owner hires the assistants on his own, before even hiring a HC, and that's before considering the Snyder/Cerrato condumbdrum's input on personnel.

This makes no sense at all. Why would he need to hire anyone as a head coach if he wants Cowher? Cowher isn't going to see the filled position as pressure to get him to sign. How would it make the job more appealing to him? How would having an owner who will hire and fire staff at the drop of a hat make him want to go to Washington? And if this was Danny's end goal why hire both coordinators when you know that Cowher is going to want to bring in his own people for these positions? If they were to go down this road, I don't see any way this move does anything but make Snyder and the Redskins look like complete and total idiots. First he hires the two coordinators and looks for a coach, then promotes one of the people he just hired two weeks earlier to head coach, then fires him a few weeks after that and hires Cowher as the head coach, then gets rid of the DC to allow Cowher to bring in his own coach.

Yeah, if I'm a skins fan (oops sorry just thinking that thought made me puke a little!!) but if I'm a fan these moves make me start thinking that pitchers and catchers are reporting this week!! Seriously I couldn't continue to be a football fan with this guy running the team. The fact that the skins have a fan base at all with this Danny at the helm is amazing!! He's a skin's fan's worst nightmare!!

LMRAO--------- and yet another "system" will take place in DC and all of a sudden they will remember that they don't have the personnel for a WCO. And by the time they are ready -- the team will be old again.

Yup, Danny is the best owner the Eagles could have in DC.

The best line I heard about the Redskins came from Steve Czaban, a sports radio host here in DC:

"ladies and gentlemen, your Washington Redskins have become the Oakland Raiders East!"

I'm glad. The skins were on the verge of a little stability and sanity which could have been a problem. But, as we can see, all is right with the world now that Danny put a halt to that.
