B-, Hard to argue but hard to get excited abotu guys who will not help immediately.
Best Pick
> WR-KR DeSean Jackson, California: It is unlikely the 5'-9 1/2", 170-pounder will be used much as a wide receiver this season, despite pleas of Eagles fans. But Jackson is a dangerous return man who will be used on punts and kickoffs and potentially could shorten the field for QB Donovan McNabb and the offense, an element that has been sorely lacking in the Eagles' arsenal for several seasons.
Could surprise
> Texas-El Paso S Quintin Demps has sub-4.4 speed and can play corner and safety. He had 17 interceptions last season. He is viewed as a possible replacement down the road for S Brian Dawkins but could end up contributing in nickel and dime packages as a rookie.
Overall
> Despite the fact they traded their first-round pick and despite the fact they spent a fourth-round pick on CB Jack Ikegwuonu (who tore up his knee in January and will not play this season), the Eagles hope to get more immediate help from this draft class than they usually get from their rookies.
The Eagles frequently are criticized for not getting much out of their rookies. But they think there are three players whom they aquired last weekend who could play significant roles in the team's 2008 success.
The first is not a rookie. It is second-year RB Lorenzo Booker, who was imported from the Miami Dolphins for a 4th round pick. The Eagles think Booker, a 3rd-round pick of the Dolphins in 2007, can step in and compliment starting RB Brian Westbrook. "He does some of the same things that Brian does," coach Andy Reid said. "You can flex him out and throw him the football. I think that the combination of he and Brian on the field will really be a nice combination for our offense."
Another player from whom Reid expects immediate returns is DT Trevor Laws, the team's first pick (47th overall). He already has been penciled in as part of a 4-man rotation along with Brodrick Bunkley and Mike Patterson and veteran Montae Reagor.
The player who could have the greatest immediate impact is Jackson, the team's other second-round selection. The Eagles were desperate for a home-run threat like Jackson in the return game."
