    On the move

Analyzing practice-squad additions for all 32 teams

    By Nolan Nawrocki
    Sept. 2, 2008

The 53-man cut down brings anticipation for hungry general managers and pro-personnel directors eager to beef up the talent on their rosters.

Talent tends to spring loose because of a team’s sheer depth, as is often the case in New England, San Diego and Indianapolis; because of coaching changes, and the league now has four new residing skippers in Atlanta, Baltimore, Miami and Washington with less emotional attachment to players acquired by the previous regimes; and because of a host of other variables such as injuries, salary structure and old age.

Once the 53-man roster is set, it becomes key for teams to establish a competitive, developmental squad from which they can elevate players. Teams are allowed to keep up to eight players on the roster to practice with the club from Monday to Thursday. Compensation is $5,200 per week, although a higher salary can be negotiated to lure or keep a practice-squad player desired by another team. When teams highly desire a player, it’s not unusual for them to offer weekly compensation equivalent to being on the 53-man roster.

Practice-squad players are free to sign a contract with another NFL club at any time if given the opportunity to join that team’s 53-man roster. No compensation is required for pilfering talent off another team’s practice squad, which often makes it the most ideal avenue for personnel departments to locate talent.

Most often, a player’s draft status is indicative of how highly sought after a waived player will be on the open market given that many teams use the extensive scouting reports written by their college scouts as a basis for building the bottom of the roster. However, many mistakes are made in the draft and undrafted free agents can draw as much interest as former early-round picks with strong preseason play.

Other pro scouting departments make their presence heavily at preseason contests and study preseason tape extensively. Still, recommendations made by agents, coaches and other evaluators around the league influence practice-squad signings.

Based on practice-squad signings of players from other teams, Baltimore was the most active with four followed by Arizona, Carolina, Cleveland, Denver and Philadelphia — all of whom signed three players from other teams to compete on their practice squads. In all, 37 developmental players signed with teams other than those that released them.

Following is a breakdown of all 32 practice squads as of today, with teams not filling all eight of their practice-squad slots noted. The bolded players came from other teams, with their former team noted in parentheses, and were likely to have drawn more interest in the open market.

Editor's note: International development players are denoted by an asterisk.

      Some surprises:

DeShawn Wynn who ran for 200 yards and 4 TDs last year from the pack made it to their practice squad this year. Hmmm.

I would have thought we'd jump at Barksdale. Perhaps Rashard didn't want to cross that bridge again.

How in the world does Drew Henson still have PS eigibility?

Only a cursory look but it looked like Barksdale is the only Philly alum on other teams PS.
        Edit-- oops missed jason davis
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy

Interesting to note that former USC SS Darnell Bing who I liked a lot is now a LB. If this guy wasn't a classic tweener he'd be a pro bowler.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.
