  • Larry Bowa and Davey Lopes

I was a boy during the last Golden Era of Phillies baseball and remember well the fierce playoff battles of the 70s with the Dodgers.

I still can't quite wrap my head around Lopes wearing Phillies red over on the first base line and Bowa wearing Dodger blue on the third base line. Not that I'm unhappy to have Lopes -- he has done a fantastic job with the Phillies running game, just fantastic.

But I can't get used to these two old warriors having swapped clubs.

Phils got the best of that exchange, IMO.

I dunno, I like both. but IMO only, Bowa got a raw deal. He had a bunch of pansy players, all out for themselves. This is a different bunch of guys.

          MD,

You would know more than me about the Bowa era I'm sure, as my Fan-aticism had finally waned considerably by the late 90s (and didn't really resume until I got a taste of the 'grit' that Utley, Rollins, Howard et al brought to the table).

Wasn't reading Philly papers online, so the only Phils' news I got was box scores and ESPN pieces, which were often about Bowa's outbursts of temper. I always liked his fire as a player, but thought the mangers job required more maturity and self control...2 qualities I'm well known for . More recently, I've learned that he did have some real asshole players to contend with, and I can just imagine how Bowa would find laziness or giving less than 100% intolerable.

How cool was it that Lopes refused to join his old Dodger infield mates and throw out the first ball last night? Lopes is awesome.
