Wow. wow. wow. wow. wow. wow. wow. wow. wow. wow. wow. wow.
What a great team. I can't believe how lucky I am that I get to root for this team.
This franchise used to run out Chad Ogea, Don Carman, Floyd Youmans and Pat Combs and hope for the best. Steve Jeltz at short, Chris James in left. Gregg Jefferies and Lance Parrish were the big-money hopes. They threw in future Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg as an extra player in a trade that was forced because Larry Bowa got into a pissing match with Bill Giles.
Curt Schilling one day threw up his hands in frustration and Ed Wade traded him for "major league ready" prospects like Travis Lee, Nelson Figueroa and Vicente Padilla. They handed out guaranteed contracts to aging relievers year after year. Scott Rolen pissed and moaned his way out of town. By dint of the guaranteed money on his contract, David Bell was run out there day after day and the GM traded Polanco for future felon Ugueth Urbina as a consequence.
These are the same Phillies? I keep going back to the other golden age of Phillies baseball -- the Schmidt/Carlton era that ran from 1976 to 1983.
Until this year, I've always maintained that the 1977 Phillies were the greatest Phillies team I ever saw. But this year has brought an end to that claim for me. The 2011 Phillies are the best team in the history of the franchise -- and that's whether they win a World Series or not. This is an incredible team.
