taz - not discounting they can get a player with those 4 late picks. Actually I posted on 3/11 that they got Mills and Mailata with pick 233 and that I wanted to get that 4th rd pick by when I suggested a trade back to 12. However, there have been a hell of a lot of those 7th rd picks who didn't even make it through training camp. In fact far more misses than hits when taking flyers on 7th round picks. So I was just noting that 11 picks sounds great but a third of them very well may not even make the practice squad.
I agree defense will probably be the focus and I believe it should be. Early on I thought CB was the way to go followed by a RB and then defense again. Personally, I like Parsons a lot even though I think it will take ten guys to hold Howie down to get him to pick a LB. More and more I think the first pick will be DE, which is a Howie staple, and many, many fans will go bonkers.
Wait until next year is a terrible philosophy
    Hope is not a strategy
    RIP

If you think Kwity Pape's ceiling is as high as I hear it is you gotta consider him at 12. He is a freakish athlete.
You know Darren if you'd have told me 10 years ago that someday I was going to solve the world's energy problems I'd have said your crazy.... now lets drop this big ball of oil out the window.

I would like to see us select guys who have proven what they can do. Players who have done it and still have a bit of upside, not guys who have unlimited potential that we can mold. Draft from the SEC and the Major schools, save the projects for the last round or the back half of the 6th.
We're looking for people that are fundamentally different,” vice president of player personnel Andy Weidl said Saturday night. “The love and passion for football, it's non-negotiable. They're caring, their character, they do the right thing persistently, and they have a relentless playing style that you can see on tape. The motor, it burns hot. You see them finishing plays. They have a team-first mentality. They're selfless individuals.

I didn't expect this at all, but I'm good with it. I did want the team to at least give Hurts an extended shot at QB1 to see if he is the answer or not. Now, the likelihood increases that the team will add to the talent around him. They get extra assets to boot. I understand the whole 'present value' argument. You know, money in your hand right now is more valuable than the promise of a payday tomorrow. Or a bird in hand...

Nevertheless, IMO the deal pays off the Eagles today by granting them optionality in adding talent today and tomorrow.

As for who might that talent be: I tend to believe that Horn/Surtain might be the pick if they're there, in the absence of Waddle, Smith or Pitts. I wouldn't rule out a trade-up ahead of Dallas for someone like Pitts, Surtain or even Parsons (who I think the Giants would grab). Hurts has spoken about Waddle in positive terms (as has Burrow about Chase) and would probably welcome working with him again.

It's also possible that the eagles could use some of their newfound draft capital to trade back up into the first round this year for a prospect. I don't think that's likely. I think this is more about 2022 and whether Hurts stands or falls.

Some of these picks might end up in a deal shipping Ertz out of Philly too....

The Eagles, suddenly, have quarterback-insurance for the 2022 draft. Philly has two picks (its own and Miami’s) in the first round of 2022, plus the likelihood that the pick from Indianapolis in the Carson Wentz trade will be a first. If Jalen Hurts isn’t The Man in 2021, Philly will have some ammo to move up to get one in 2022. There was a dark cloud over the Eagles after a debacle of a 2020 season, plus the whacking of Doug Peterson and Carson Wentz. You don’t know how this trade works out, of course, but I like this deal for Philadelphia. It leaves the Eagles with a 40 to 50 percent chance, at number 12, to get one of the four top receivers/tight ends in the draft to fill a need for a franchise pass-catcher if that’s how they choose to pick.

This year’s draft, with all the opt-outs and uncertainty after an abridged season and scouting restrictions, is a total crapshoot. Next year’s draft will be a return to normalcy, most likely, and a first-rounder next year should have higher value than a first-rounder this year. The possibility of having three first-round picks in the first potentially normal season and pre-draft season since 2019 could be franchise-changing for the Eagles, who have 20 picks in the next two drafts.

Regarding Chase, Burrow reportedly lobbying the Bengals for his selection, and the Eagles trading down:

While it appears Chase was the Eagles' primary target at No. 6, Roseman seemed convinced the Bengals would take him at five as the first non-quarterback off the board -- instead of Cincinnati taking offensive lineman Penei Sewell. Trading down from No. 6 to No. 12 allows the Eagles to reset and still find a playmaker in the process.

Philadelphia is banking on another quarterback being selected in the top 10, which would be a maximum of five quarterbacks taken in the top 10 spots (assuming the top four picks are quarterbacks). Offensive lineman Rashawn Slater, cornerback Patrick Surtain II, and linebacker Micah Parsons could also be selected before the Eagles pick at No. 12. That's nine picks -- including the Chase to Bengals report -- leaving two more selections before Philadelphia picks at No. 12. Smith and Waddle could be taken before then, but the Eagles could have the one playmaker remaining between Smith, Chase, and Pitts -- still getting the playmaker they would have taken at No. 6 and acquiring more draft assets in the process.

If the Eagles do end up with one of the top wide receivers (or Pitts) at No. 12, the trade is a win for Roseman and the Eagles' front office.

This won’t be a popular post but I hate this trade. Absolutely HATE it!!! How many high draft picks have we wasted under Roseman trying to find a WR? Let’s take a look:

2014: Jordan Matthews 2nd Round & Josh Huff 3rd Round.
                2017: Mack Hollins, 4th Round
                2019: JJ Arcega-Whiteside 2nd Round
                2020: Jalen Reagor 1st Round

So we have spent a first, two seconds, a third and a fourth and we STILL DON’T HAVE A TRUE #1 RECEIVER!! They desperately need a top receiver and I would have accepted Pitts as someone who could double as a wideout. They had a chance to fix this and instead of holding the pick and insuring that they would get the guy, they end up playing games and hoping someone falls to them. That very well may happen but given their history and lack of ability to pick a difference maker they cannot afford to roll the dice like this.

Howie flat out sucks at player selection so having three 1st rounders next year is just three more players he will miss on. I have ZERO confidence in him. Even if they manage to land Waddle, Smith, or buy some miracle Pitts I will never agree with this move. They may get lucky - but it will be a dumb luck. Howie always thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room when he’s the biggest fool in the league. He couldn’t pick a good player with 32 first round picks.

I hated it too Juk until I thought it through. I really don't think that Hurts is going to be the answer but he might be decent. 3 #1 picks next year should get us in position to get one. I don't have any more faith in the ferret than any other person in Philadelphia. We have to hope last years rookie class steps up. There's no reason to think that Reagor and the passing game won't improve with the whole starting line coming back. Of course all of this goes nowhere until Luri gets Whoie out of player evaluation, but seeing as though he's obviously Luri's long lost son I really doubt it.

Chase Claypool, DK Metcalf, Antonio Brown, JuJu, Tyreek Hill, Kenny Golladay, Diggs, Davante Adams, A.J. Brown, Tee Higgins... none were taken in the top 20 or I think even the first round.

You don't have to be a first round pick to be a number one or even an elite game-changing receiver. The Eagles just need to get it right once time. And yeah... Howie never gets it right. But also, didn't Nelson Agholor have a much better year in Oakland than in Philly the prior 2 years? What if the issue is a lot more the guy throwing the ball to them than we think it is?

He got good press last year but he also had his usual drops too. He had ONE good season in Philly then returned to junk. He'll most likely return to that again in Oakland this season. I'm super happy that he's gone and let's never speak of this stiff again.

Aggy is in New England now

he was hot and cold in Philly. But I will still have some love for his 3 clutch catches on that go ahead drive in the SB. Amazing contested grabs

Let's face it, every Bird played well over their head in that game and he was one of them. They bowled a 300 and won. He finally didn't screw up and played up to his ability like the rest of the team. They were stoked out of their minds and it was infectious and he got caught up in it.

It's funny, but I read somewhere that he needs to be a slot receiver and the one good year in Philly was the one season he played slot.

Guys my point was simple: the Eagles have wasted a shit-ton of capital trying to get a true #1 receiver. They had a can’t miss, stone-cold lock this year with 3 spectacular receivers in Smith, Chase and Pitts (TE title or not I’m including him!). You could argue Waddle as well but with 3 QBs clearly expected to go before them as well as Sewell meaning they were assured of having at least 1 of these players a a available to them. Instead of doing the smart thing and FINALLY getting the guy they’ve been spending pick after pick for, they trade down for another pick. They are idiots and I’m still pissed. I want Howie gone no matter what happens next month.
